Answer key (for parents)

Answer key: Surface area of a box

  1. 1.

    124

    Find the three face sizes: 9 × 4 = 36, 9 × 2 = 18, and 4 × 2 = 8. Each face has a matching face, so add and double: 36 + 18 + 8 = 62, and 2 × 62 = 124 square centimeters.

  2. 2.

    188

    One coat covers the whole outside: 5 × 4 = 20, 5 × 3 = 15, 4 × 3 = 12, and 2 × (20 + 15 + 12) = 94 square feet. Two coats cover it twice: 2 × 94 = 188 square feet.

  3. 3.

    74

    The whole box would be 2 × (5 × 4 + 5 × 3 + 4 × 3) = 2 × (20 + 15 + 12) = 94 square inches. The top (5 × 4 = 20) gets no paper: 94 − 20 = 74 square inches.

Equivalent answers count as correct: 2/4 for 1/2, 0.5 for 1/2, and so on.
