What math intervention actually is, and how to run it at home

Math intervention is extra, structured teaching a school gives a student who has fallen behind, on top of regular class. Federal research guides describe what belongs in it: explicit instruction, math vocabulary, visual models, number lines, word-problem structure, and regular timed fact work. You can run the same six parts at home.

What does math intervention mean at school?

When a teacher says your child is getting intervention, they almost always mean the same thing: a small group, a few times a week, twenty to forty minutes, working through the specific skills that are missing. It sits on top of the regular lesson and carries its own measurement. Schools organize these layers into what they call a multi-tiered system of supports.

"Intensive intervention is considered the most intense level of intervention and also may be known as Tier 3." The framework rests on the layers underneath it: quality Tier 1 core instruction and Tier 2 secondary supports have to be working before the most intensive layer can do its job.

That last part is what separates it from tutoring. A tutor usually works on tonight's homework. Intervention works through a planned sequence and keeps a score.

What is actually in an intervention session?

This is the part most parents never see, and it is the part worth copying. The federal What Works Clearinghouse published a guide for exactly this question in 2021, covering kindergarten through grade 6. It gives six recommendations, and unusually, every single one carries the top evidence rating.

All six recommendations in "Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Intervention in the Elementary Grades" (March 2021, grades K-6) are rated Strong Evidence, including: "Provide systematic instruction during intervention to develop student understanding of mathematical ideas" and "Provide deliberate instruction on word problems to deepen students' mathematical understanding and support their capacity to apply mathematical ideas."

Six parts. The hard part is not understanding them, it is holding the sequence steady for weeks when the evenings are already full.

Can I run the same six things at home?

You can run a smaller version. The table below puts each recommendation next to what it looks like at a kitchen table in twenty minutes. A parent cannot replicate a trained interventionist, and this is not a substitute for school support. It is what to do while you wait for it, or alongside it.

For the order, ask the teacher which skills are missing, or work backward through last year's topics in the order the standards list them. Chasing whatever came home in the backpack is what makes progress invisible.
Clear and concise mathematical languageMake your child say the answer in words, not just write it. "Three eighths" rather than pointing. If they cannot name the denominator, that is the gap, not the arithmetic.
Concrete and semi-concrete representationsWhen a problem is wrong, draw it before re-explaining it. Fraction bars for parts of a whole, a rectangle for area, stacks for volume.
The number lineKeep a blank number line on the table. Use it for rounding, for where a decimal sits, for what subtracting a fraction does. It is the one model that carries all the way into algebra.
Deliberate instruction on word problemsCover the numbers with your thumb and have your child read the problem as a plain story. Ask one question: is the amount getting bigger, getting smaller, or being shared out? They pick the operation before you uncover the numbers. A child who cannot answer that question is stuck on the story, and no amount of arithmetic drill will fix it.
Regular timed activitiesA fixed clock on a fixed number of problems, every session. The 2009 companion guide puts about ten minutes of each session on fact retrieval alone.
"Interventions at all grade levels should devote about 10 minutes in each session to building fluent retrieval of basic arithmetic facts" (moderate evidence, 2009 guide). The 2021 guide states it as "Regularly include timed activities as one way to build fluency in mathematics" (strong evidence).

If word problems are the gap: the 3 places it breaks down

How do I ask the school for math intervention?

Ask what the screening already says before you ask for anything new. Screening every student is the first recommendation in the older federal guide, so many districts already hold a number on your child that nobody has shown you.

  1. Email the teacher and ask three questions: what does our math screening show for my child, what support is already happening in class, and what would trigger a move to small-group intervention.
  2. Bring the log. Four weeks of dated scores on the same six problems gives the teacher something to act on, which a description of how homework went cannot.
  3. Ask what the exit criteria are. A school that can tell you when intervention stops is running a real one.
  4. Ask how progress gets measured and how often. If the answer is "we will see how she does," that is a scheduling answer rather than a monitoring one.

How do I know if it is working?

Schools answer this with a procedure: set a target before starting, score the same skill repeatedly, compare the recent scores against that target. The waiting period is longer than most parents expect, and that is deliberate.

"If at least three weeks of instruction have passed and six data points have been collected, examine the four most recent data points." Four points above the goal line means raise the goal; four below means consider adapting the intervention; a mix means keep collecting data.

Two details carry over to a kitchen table. Write the target down before the first session, because a score with nothing to compare it to tells you nothing. And never re-use the same problems to measure progress: your child will remember the answers long before the skill becomes automatic, so the score rises while the skill has not.

On why repeated measurement needs parallel forms: "if we give an easy form, we would imagine a high rate of growth. If we give hard forms we would imagine maybe even a negative form of growth." Forms should be "designed to be as close as possible, as equivalent as possible" so growth reflects "true growth and not just an accident of the form."

Change the numbers and hold the difficulty still: same digit counts, same regrouping or none, same denominators.

What if the school says no, or the waitlist is long?

Intervention capacity is finite and your child may not be the furthest behind in the building. That answer is frustrating and it is also often true. What you can do without permission is run the six parts yourself, on a fixed daily scope, with a written score each time.

You do not have to be able to teach fraction division to insist on one skill a day, a drawn model for every miss, a clock on the page, and a dated number in a log. Those four are about how the session runs, so they travel to a kitchen table intact. The two that do not travel as well are diagnosis and adaptation, which is exactly what you keep asking the school for while you wait.

What is the difference between math intervention and tutoring?

Tutoring usually follows the class: tonight's homework, this week's chapter. Intervention follows the gap. It runs a planned sequence on the missing skills, scores the same skill repeatedly, and has criteria for stopping. A tutor can do intervention, but you have to ask for a sequence and a written score, otherwise the hour fills up with homework.

How long does math intervention usually last?

The federal decision rules put a floor on it: at least three weeks of instruction and six scores before the data can be read at all, and four weeks with eight scores before a trend can be trusted. In practice schools run a cycle of several weeks, look at the scores against the goal, and then decide to continue, change the approach, or stop. If nobody can tell you when the next decision point is, the cycle is not really being monitored.

Can I do math intervention at home without a specialist?

You can run a smaller version. Four of the six are about how a session is run: one skill at a time, a drawing for every miss, a number line on the table, and a clock on a fixed number of problems. None of those require you to teach the math. What a trained interventionist adds is diagnosis when you cannot tell which skill is actually missing, and adaptation when the plan stops working.
