How to help your child catch up in math: a 4-week plan

Most children who fall behind in math are missing two or three specific skills, not a whole year of school. The fastest way to help is to find those gaps, practice them for 15 to 20 minutes a day, and check the work the same day. Four weeks of that closes more ground than starting a new curriculum.
Why does a child fall behind in math, and why does it seem sudden?
Math stacks. Each year's work sits on top of a few skills from the year before, so a gap in one of them (multiplication facts, fraction equivalence, place value with decimals) stays hidden until the next unit leans on it. Then everything looks wrong at once, and it feels sudden. How do you find the gaps without a tutor or a diagnostic test?
You do not need a formal assessment to start. Week one of the plan is a home diagnosis: a few short sessions of mixed problems, watched closely. Take about ten problems from the current unit and ten from the core topics of the previous grade (multiplication and division facts, multi-digit procedures, fractions, and one or two word problems). Keep each session to 15 minutes, and do not help during the session. You are not testing whether your child can get the answers with support; you are looking for where the work breaks.
- Facts are slow. Your child hesitates or skip-counts on a single fact like 7 × 8. The gap is fact recall, and it slows down every larger procedure built on top of it.
- The procedure is wrong even though the facts are right. Columns misaligned, a regrouping step skipped, the wrong number brought down in long division. The gap is the procedure and the place value underneath it.
- Fractions do not click. Equivalent fractions, comparing with unlike denominators, or adding them. This is the most common gap in grades 4 to 6 and the one most likely to get blamed on 'everything.'
- The calculation is right but the word problem is wrong. Your child can compute but cannot decide which operation the story calls for. That is a reading and structure gap, not an arithmetic one.

What does a 4-week math catch-up plan look like?
The plan borrows its structure from how schools run intervention, scaled down to a kitchen table. The IES guide recommends that instruction during intervention be explicit and systematic, that every session spend about 10 minutes building fluent recall of basic facts, and that progress be monitored rather than assumed (Recommendations 3, 6, and 7, verified 2026-09-06). Three rules make the plan hold. Keep the session at 15 to 20 minutes with a fixed number of problems, so the finish line is visible before your child starts. Check the answers the same day, while the mistake is still fresh enough to fix. And never add problems as a consequence for a bad score; that teaches a child that working quickly gets punished, and the routine ends in week two.

Most parents cannot re-teach fractions from scratch on a Tuesday night, and the research does not ask them to. Over four weeks you want three things to move. Accuracy on the gap topic should climb toward 90 percent. And the mistakes should shift from careless (a copied digit, a skipped step) toward genuinely new ideas.
