Questions parents ask
- Which placement test should my child take?
- Take the test for the grade your child just finished. A child starting 5th grade in September takes the 4th grade test. Near the end of the school year, take the test for the current grade.
- How long does the test take?
- Each test has 15 questions and is meant to be finished in 20 minutes on paper, without a calculator. Most of the time goes to the word problems near the end.
- What score means my child is ready for the next grade?
- A score of 12 to 15 means your child has a solid hold on the grade's main skills. A score of 0 to 11 means some skills need review first. The skill breakdown shows which areas the missed questions came from.
- Is this an official or standardized placement test?
- This is a quick skills check. It is not a standardized or normed test, it does not give a percentile, and it is not connected to any school or district. Your child's school makes official placement decisions.
- Can I get the test as a PDF?
- Yes. Open the printable test and choose Print. In the print window, pick Save as PDF as the destination to keep a copy. The answer key prints on its own last page so you can remove it before your child starts.
- Where do the questions come from?
- The questions were written by the team behind the 15Q20M daily math workbooks for grades 4 to 6. Each one is aligned to a Common Core standard for that grade, and every answer was checked by recomputing it.
- Do I need an account?
- No. The test is free, and scoring it online needs no account or email address.
