Best 4th grade math workbooks for daily practice: an honest comparison
By 15Q20M Editorial · Last updated
The best 4th grade math workbook depends on who will check the answers. Spectrum Math teaches through 192 pages of chapter lessons, Evan-Moor and 180 Days give a short daily page, and 15Q20M is scored by a free app. We compared six books on price, daily load, answer keys, and help after a miss.
How we compared 4th grade math workbooks
Prices, page counts, and formats come from each publisher's product page, opened on October 7, 2026. Where a publisher page did not mention an answer key, we checked the Amazon listing too. Our own book's details come from its Amazon listing and our print file. We did not buy retail copies of the other five books, so this is a listing comparison, and where a listing is silent the table says so. Every book got the same five questions: what it costs, how the practice is laid out, who checks the answers, what happens after a wrong answer, and whether anything needs an ongoing payment.
The Common Core names three critical areas for 4th grade: multi-digit multiplication and division; fraction equivalence, adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, and multiplying a fraction by a whole number; and classifying shapes by their properties (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, Grade 4 introduction, p. 27). Every publisher topic list here mentions operations, fractions, and geometry. A product page cannot show how deep each book goes, so we did not rank them on content. The table sticks to what a listing can show: the daily load and the checking.
4th grade math workbooks compared: price, pages, and who checks the answers
Disclosure: 15Q20M makes and sells the 15Q20M workbook included in this comparison.
| Workbook | Price | Pages | How the practice is laid out | Who checks the answers | Help after a wrong answer | Subscription |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scholastic Success With Grade 4: Math | $6.99 list | 48 | More than 40 skill-practice pages; no daily plan stated | A parent. Neither the publisher page nor the Amazon listing mentions an answer key | Not described on the publisher page | None |
| Spectrum Math, Grade 4 | $14.99 list | 192 | Chapter lessons, a test in every chapter, parent support pages at the start of each chapter | A parent, with the answer key in the book | Not described on the publisher page | None (lessons list IXL skill IDs for optional online practice) |
| Evan-Moor Daily Math Practice, Grade 4 (teacher's edition) | $23.99 list | 128 | 5 short problems on days 1 to 4, a longer day-5 activity; 36 weeks | A parent, with the teacher's-edition key. The $8.99 student book has no key | Not described on the publisher page | None |
| 180 Days: Math for Fourth Grade | $23.99 list | 208 | 10 problems a day for 180 days, with diagnostic tools for tracking progress | A parent, with the answer key in the book | Not described on the publisher page | None |
| IXL The Ultimate Grade 4 Math Workbook | $16.99 list | 224 | Skill-based practice pages; no daily plan stated | A parent for the book; IXL online checks its own online questions | Step-by-step explanations on IXL online questions | None for the book; IXL online is free for 10 questions a day per subject, $79 a year for math |
| 15Q20M Daily Math Practice, Grade 4 | $14.99 | 180 | 15 problems in one 20-minute session, 80 days | The free app, the same day (a four-page key is in the back too) | A step-by-step explanation in the app, plus a printable twin problem (same skill, new numbers) | None |
Prices are the publishers' own, checked October 7, 2026; retail prices move from week to week. IXL's free limit and membership price were checked on IXL's own pages on September 18, 2026 ($129 and $159 plans add other subjects). For Evan-Moor we list the teacher's edition, because the publisher says its student books do not contain answer keys.

What one day in our Grade 4 workbook looks like
A table cannot show what a child actually sits down with. We can only show our own book's pages, so here is Day 37 of our Grade 4 book, "Compare with a Common Denominator or 1/2," printed on pages 79 and 80. The examples are copied from the page; the trail mix problem is cut after its question. The 15 problems climb from quick symbol choices to a two-step story problem.
| Problems | What they ask | Example from Day 37 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Compare a fraction with 1/2 by choosing <, >, or = | 2/3 __ 1/2 |
| 4 to 8 | Compare two fractions, pick a fraction greater than 1/2, find a common denominator | Common denominator for 2/3 and 3/4 is ___ (choices 7, 6, 9, 12) |
| 9 and 10 | Explain a comparison, put fractions in order | Why is 5/8 > 1/2? |
| 11 to 14 | Short problems, mostly stories | Jake's three trail mix bags weigh 2/5 lb, 1/2 lb, and 3/10 lb. Which bag is the lightest? |
| 15 | A two-step problem | A water tank is 9/10 full. First 2/10 is used for cooking, then 3/10 is used for cleaning. What fraction of the tank is left? |
Suppose your child misses the trail mix problem. The app's explanation renames everything in tenths: "2/5 = 4/10. 1/2 = 5/10. 3/10 = 3/10. Now compare: 3/10 < 4/10 < 5/10." Then it offers a twin problem to print, the same skill with new numbers: "Tara's three snack bags weigh 3/5 lb, 1/2 lb, and 1/10 lb. What is the weight of the lightest bag?" Both lines are quoted from the app's content for Day 37, problem 12.
Of the 1,200 problems in our Grade 4 book, 162 practice multi-digit multiplication and division (mostly Days 17 to 32), 242 practice fractions (mostly Days 33 to 48), and 167 practice lines, shapes, and angle measurement (mostly Days 65 to 75). Those line up with the three critical areas in the Grade 4 standards, with angle measurement counted alongside shapes.
What each 4th grade workbook is actually good at
Scholastic Success With Grade 4: Math is the cheapest book here and the shortest: 48 pages, more than 40 practice pages across number sense, operations, fractions and decimals, measurement, and geometry. With far fewer pages than the other five, it suits a light supplement or a summer review better than a year of daily practice. Neither its publisher page nor its Amazon listing mentions an answer key, so look inside before you buy if that matters to you.
Spectrum Math is the most traditional choice: chapter lessons, a test in every chapter, and parent support pages with definitions and tips at the start of each chapter. The Amazon listing says an answer key is included. You set the pace, and you do the checking.
Evan-Moor Daily Math Practice is built as a spiral review: five short problems on each of four days, a longer problem-solving activity on the fifth, for 36 weeks. The publisher puts it at 10 to 15 minutes a day. Buy the teacher's edition. The $8.99 student workbook has no answer key, which is why the teacher's edition is the one in our table.
180 Days of Math for Fourth Grade gives a single page of 10 problems for each school day and includes an answer key and diagnostic tools. Over 180 days that adds up to 1,800 problems. It is a strong fit for a family that wants a page every school day and has a parent ready to check 10 answers each evening.
IXL's Ultimate Grade 4 workbook has the most pages, 224, with full-color illustrations. The listing invites you to connect the book to IXL online to unlock extra questions and instant feedback. IXL online does explain a wrong answer step by step, on its own online questions. A free IXL account allows 10 questions a day per subject; a math membership is $79 a year. The written pages in the book are still checked by an adult.
Our book is built around one session: 15 problems on paper in about 20 minutes, then the answers typed into a free app that scores them the same day, explains each miss step by step, and prints a twin problem to retry. It is built for practice after a topic has been taught at school. If what you need is a lesson that teaches each topic from the start, Spectrum does that job better.
Side by side: 15Q20M vs Spectrum Math
Which 4th grade math workbook has an answer key, and who does the checking?
Four of the six have a key, by their listings or, for ours, the book itself. The 180 Days page lists an answer key, the Spectrum Amazon listing lists one, Evan-Moor puts its key in the teacher's edition (the student books have none), and our book has a four-page key in the back. For Scholastic we found no mention either way. The bigger question is who uses the key. With the five print-only books, an adult checks the page with the key, on whatever schedule the family keeps. A key marks which answers are wrong; explaining why is still up to you. That is the column where these books differ most.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best math workbook for 4th grade?
It depends on who will check the answers. For textbook-style lessons, Spectrum Math has 192 pages of chapter lessons and tests. For a short daily page, Evan-Moor's teacher's edition gives five short problems on four days a week plus a longer fifth-day activity for 36 weeks, and 180 Days gives 10 problems for each school day. For a 15-problem daily session that a free app scores and explains, 15Q20M is built for that.
Do 4th grade math workbooks come with answer keys?
Many do, but check the edition. Evan-Moor's $8.99 student workbook has no key; the teacher's edition does. 180 Days lists an answer key and diagnostic tools, and the Spectrum Amazon listing lists an answer key. We found no mention of a key for Scholastic Success With Grade 4: Math, so look inside the book on the retailer page. 15Q20M has a four-page key in the back, and the free app checks each day's answers.
What math should a 4th grade workbook cover?
The Common Core names three critical areas for 4th grade: multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions (equivalence, adding and subtracting with like denominators, and multiplying a fraction by a whole number), and classifying shapes by properties such as parallel sides, angles, and symmetry.
