What math should a 4th grader know? A Common Core breakdown

Grade 4 Common Core math comes down to three things: fluency with multi-digit multiplication and division, fraction equivalence plus like-denominator addition and subtraction, and classifying 2-D shapes by their properties. Place value and multi-digit arithmetic (4.NBT) take up 33.7% of our own 1,200-question Grade 4 workbook, more than any other domain.
The 3 things Grade 4 math focuses on
Common Core states it directly: Grade 4 instructional time "should focus on three critical areas: (1) developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; (2) developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; (3) understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry."
- Multi-digit multiplication & division (4.NBT): multiply up to a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number, and divide to find whole-number quotients and remainders.
- Fraction equivalence & like-denominator operations (4.NF): recognize equivalent fractions, and add, subtract, and multiply fractions with the same denominator by a whole number.
- 2-D shape classification (4.G): identify and classify shapes by their lines, angles, and symmetry.
Why place value and multi-digit arithmetic lead the year
Number and Operations in Base Ten (4.NBT) — place value, rounding, and multi-digit +/−/×/÷ — is 33.7% of our Grade 4 workbook's 1,200 questions, the largest single domain in the grade.
This is the year the standard algorithms for multi-digit multiplication and long division actually get built. Grade 3 works with single-digit factors and simple division facts; Grade 4 pushes to 4-digit × 1-digit multiplication and multi-digit division with remainders. That fluency also underpins Grade 5's 2-digit-divisor division and decimal operations, which is why a shaky Grade 4 often shows up later as a Grade 5 struggle.

What this means for practice at home
Multi-digit arithmetic should get the largest share of a Grade 4 routine, but don't skip fractions (25.8%, the second-largest domain) to make room for it. Grade 4 only covers fraction equivalence and like-denominator operations; Grade 5 immediately requires unlike-denominator addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions. A Grade 4 routine that under-practices fractions sets up the Grade 5 jump (25.8% → 34.1%) to land harder than it needs to.

Yes — Grade 4 requires finding whole-number quotients and remainders with up to 4-digit dividends and 1-digit divisors (4.NBT.B.6), using strategies based on place value and the relationship between multiplication and division.
How is 4th grade fraction work different from 5th grade?
Grade 4 covers fraction equivalence and operations with the same (like) denominator only. Grade 5 requires adding and subtracting fractions with different (unlike) denominators and multiplying fractions by fractions, which is a genuine step up in difficulty.
What's the hardest part of 4th grade math for most kids?
