Common Core math, grades 4–6: what changes each year

Common Core math shifts focus by grade: Grade 4 centers on multi-digit multiplication and division, Grade 5 shifts hardest toward fractions, and Grade 6 pivots to the rational number system and algebraic expressions. In our own 3,600-question workbook set, fractions jump from 25.8% of practice to 34.1% between Grade 4 and 5, the biggest shift in the sequence.
Why Common Core math feels different every year
Common Core organizes each grade around a small number of "critical areas" — the topics that should get the bulk of instructional time. Grade 4 and Grade 5 each have three; Grade 6 has four. Reading those critical areas grade by grade shows exactly where the difficulty shifts, and why a workbook built for one grade can't just be reused for the next.
Grade 4: multi-digit arithmetic takes over
Common Core's own framing: Grade 4 instructional time "should focus on three critical areas: (1) developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; (2) developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; (3) understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties."
In our own Grade 4 workbook (1,200 questions), Number and Operations in Base Ten — place value and multi-digit +/−/×/÷ — makes up 33.7% of all practice, the largest single domain. Fractions (4.NF) are already 25.8%, ahead of measurement, operations, and geometry combined behind them.
Grade 5: the fraction cliff
Grade 5's critical areas, per Common Core: "(1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases; (2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system...; and (3) developing understanding of volume." Fraction work stops being one topic among several and becomes the topic.
Fractions (5.NF) are 34.1% of our Grade 5 workbook, up from 25.8% in Grade 4 and the largest domain in any grade we cover. It's the single biggest jump in the entire 4–6 sequence, and a likely reason 5th grade is when many kids first feel math practice get harder.
Grade 6: numbers become variables
Grade 6 adds a fourth critical area and a real turn in what "number" means: "(1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division...; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking."
In our Grade 6 workbook, The Number System (6.NS — the rational numbers, including negatives) is 37.8% of practice and Expressions & Equations (6.EE) is 22.5%. Together that's 60.3% of the grade. To be precise, 6.NS extends arithmetic to negative and rational numbers; variables and equations don't start until 6.EE.

Read across the rows and you can watch the shift happen: place-value arithmetic (NBT) dominates Grade 4, fractions take the lead in Grade 5, and in Grade 6 "NBT" becomes "NS" as negative numbers enter the picture.
Our method
These percentages come from 15Q20M's own question banks: 1,200 CCSS-tagged questions per grade, 3,600 total, each mapped to a specific standard (e.g. 5.NF.A.1) and rolled up to its domain. This is our editorial allocation of practice time, not an official Common Core weighting. Common Core doesn't publish domain percentages at all, which is exactly why we're publishing ours: it's the most concrete answer we could find to "what does 5th grade math actually spend its time on?"

Why does Common Core math get harder in 5th grade specifically?
Fractions go from 25.8% of practice in Grade 4 to 34.1% in Grade 5, per our own workbook data — the largest single-year jump of any domain across Grades 4–6. It's also where fraction operations (not just fraction concepts) start being required.
Is 6th grade math the start of algebra?
Partly. Expressions & Equations (6.EE) is 22.5% of Grade 6 practice and is where variables and one-step equations are introduced. The larger share, The Number System (6.NS, 37.8%), is about extending arithmetic to negative and rational numbers: a prerequisite for algebra, not algebra itself.
Do all states use these exact standards?
Most US states adopted Common Core for math, though some have since renamed or lightly modified their versions. The critical areas and domain structure quoted here are from the official Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
