What math should a 5th grader know? A Common Core breakdown

In Grade 5, Common Core math focuses on three things: adding and subtracting fractions fluently, extending division to 2-digit divisors with decimals, and understanding volume. The 3 things Grade 5 math focuses on

Common Core states it plainly: Grade 5 instructional time "should focus on three critical areas: (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases...; (2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths...; and (3) developing understanding of volume."

  • Fractions (5.NF): add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, multiply fractions, and divide in limited cases (a unit fraction by a whole number, or a whole number by a unit fraction).
  • Multi-digit division & decimals (5.NBT): divide with 2-digit divisors, and add/subtract/multiply/divide decimals to the hundredths place.
  • Volume (5.MD): understand volume as filling 3-D space with unit cubes, and find the volume of rectangular prisms.

Why fractions take over in 5th grade

Fractions (5.NF) are 34.1% of our Grade 5 workbook's 1,200 questions — the single largest domain, up from 25.8% in Grade 4. No other domain jumps that much in one year.

The questions themselves change too, not just the count. Grade 4 mostly builds fraction concepts (equivalence, comparing). Grade 5 requires fraction operations: adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, multiplying a fraction by a fraction, and the early cases of fraction division. If a 5th grader is stuck, this is the first place to look.

What this means for practice at home

Given the weighting, a 5th grader's daily practice should lean toward fractions more than any other topic. The other domains still matter, but fraction fluency is both the largest share of Grade 5 and the base for Grade 6's fraction division and beyond. A routine that gives all five domains equal time will under-practice the one most likely to cause trouble.
