A 5-question self-check before you assume it is a big problem
- Can they still solve last year's material without trouble? If not, the gap is likely from an earlier grade, not this one.
- Does the struggle start specifically once fractions or decimals are involved? That points to the fraction jump, not a general math problem.
- Do they get single-step problems right but multi-step or word problems wrong? That is a translation issue, not a computation one.
- Do they know how to start but avoid starting, rush through it, or guess? That is confidence, and it needs a different fix than more practice.
- Has this been consistent for two or more weeks, or was it one hard homework night? A single rough night is normal and not a pattern yet.

How do I know if my child needs a tutor?

Should I sit with my child and go over every math homework?
