Why 4th grade struggling looks different from other grades
Grade 4 is the year the standard multiplication and division algorithms get built for the first time — not reviewed, built. A self-check before you assume it's a bigger problem
- Do they know multiplication facts through 12×12 quickly, or do they count or skip-count to get there? If it's the second one, that's the gap — and it's worth fixing directly before anything else.
- Once the facts are solid, does the multi-digit procedure itself still go wrong — columns misaligned, a step skipped, a remainder that makes no sense? That points to the algorithm, not the facts.
- Can they explain why 1/2 and 2/4 are the same amount, or only that they memorized it's true? If they can't explain it, the equivalence idea hasn't clicked yet.
- Do they solve single-step problems fine but freeze or guess the operation once a problem has two parts or comparison language (“three times as many”)? That's a word-problem gap, not a computation one.
- Has this held for two or more weeks, or was it one rough homework night? A single hard night is normal and not a pattern yet.
Whichever pattern matches is where this week's practice should go — not a blanket “more math” plan that spreads thin across all four.
